Join in Walk-A-Thon to Benefit Scholarships

Faculty members are invited to participate in the VCU Staff Senate’s annual Walk-a-Thon benefiting the Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship. The event begins at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17, at the Larrick Student Center, 900 Turpin St., on the Medical College of Virginia campus.

This is the Staff Senate’s ninth annual Walk-A-Thon — and the first taking place under its new name, the Marquita Aguilar Walk-A-Thon.

Dr. Eric West, Associate Professor with VCU Recreational Sports, and some of his associates will lead participants in a fun-filled warm up and short workout on the Bear Hall lawn. At noon, we’ll have a short program featuring Dr. David Hanson, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Special Guest Marquita Aguilar and Staff Senate President Katherine Poarch. Participants will then convene in the Court End Ballroom for some lunch and giveaways.

The Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship is an undergraduate award for juniors and seniors in financial need with a grade point average of 2.7 or better. Since beginning the program in 2005, the scholarship has helped approximately 80 undergraduate students continue their education and graduate from VCU by raising more than $70,000 cumulatively from the VCU and VCU Health System communities.

Here is the latest draft of the Student Code of Conduct, courtesy of Brian Daugherity, chair of the Student Affairs Committee. The Faculty Senate will discuss this at its April 2 meeting.

Great Place Initiative ‘town hall’ meetings

Maike Philipsen, a co-chair of VCU’s Great Place Initiative, urges faculty members to “save the date” for two town hall meetings to hear and discuss the results of the recently conducted climate survey. The meetings will be:

¶ 9-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, in the Student Commons Theater, 907 Floyd Ave.

¶ 1:30-3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, in Perkinson Conference Room 3121 of the School of Dentistry, 1101 E. Leigh St.

VCU Online Strategic Plan Task Force

At our meeting on Tuesday, Jeff Nugent briefed the Senate on the activities of VCU’s Online Strategic Plan Task Force. The task force will be working through this semester to understand of the current state of online education at VCU, engage in information gathering from a broad range of University stakeholders and develop a preliminary strategic plan by May 2013.

There are three upcoming open forums that Jeff encouraged faculty to attend:

20 March, 12-1pm (University Student Commons, Virginia Rooms A)
21 March, 12 -1pm (University Student Commons, Richmond Salon III)
27 March, 12-1pm (Larrick Center, Jackson Ward)

Take the Great Place Initiative Climate Survey

The following is a message from Maike Philipsen, a co-chair of VCU’s Great Place Initiative. The Faculty Senate is not a sponsor of the GPI; however, we are cooperating and facilitating with the initiative. Questions should be directed to Maike at miphilip@vcu.edu.

Participate in the Great Place Initiative Climate Survey On-Line

The Great Place Initiative (GPI) seeks ways to better support employees at VCU. During the first phase of the initiative, employees will be asked to provide feedback about what should be preserved, strengthened, or changed at VCU.

Please help in the first phase of the GPI and encourage the units you represent to fill out the climate survey. A link will be e-mailed to all employees on February 4 and the survey will be open for two weeks. An outside service provider will receive and analyze the data to protect employee confidentiality and it will not be possible to identify individuals in any written report. Participation is voluntary and employees who complete the survey will have a chance to win an iPad Mini.

President Rao to address faculty on Feb. 5

President Rao will make his annual State of the University presentation to the Faculty Senate and the Faculty of the University on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 5 p.m. in the Student Commons Theatre on the Monroe Park Campus, immediately following a business meeting of the Faculty Senate in the same location.

All faculty members are welcome. This is an annual event called for by the By-Laws of the University Faculty. (The By-Laws state: “The President of Faculty Senate shall formally request that the President of the University convene the Faculty for a General Faculty Meeting during the semester for the purpose of reporting on the state of the University and receiving questions from the Faculty.”)

Please feel welcome to attend if you can.
