Subject: REMINDER: Promotion and Tenure Policy Review Hearings

Dear Colleagues:

As you may recall, President Rao charged an Ad Hoc Committee to review and revise, where necessary, the promotion and tenure policies and procedures of the university. With the implementation of a new strategic plan and the fact that it has been six years since the last review of our policies and procedures, this review provides a critical opportunity to assess the current guidelines.

This 19 member committee was convened in November 2011 and charged with assessing and highlighting best practices in higher education regarding promotion and tenure, reviewing current VCU policies and procedures to address dated materials and accuracy, and reviewing current VCU guidelines and suggesting revisions to bring policies in line with Quest for Distinction. Committee membership ensured representation of academic units across the university.

The committee has now provided recommended revisions to the policies and procedures. Since this review is of vital importance to the university community, a series of open hearings have been scheduled to ensure that faculty have an adequate opportunity to ask questions, offer input and seek clarification from the Ad Hoc Committee. I invite you to join me and the committee co-chairs (Drs. Mary Secret, Len Smock and Wendy Kliewer) at one of these open hearings, the first of which is this week, Wednesday October 10.

Four hearings are scheduled:

– October 10, 2012: 8:00-9:30 a.m. Richmond Salons 3&4, Student Commons
– October 22, 2012: 3:00-4:30 p.m. Virginia Rooms B-C-D, Student Commons
– November 1, 2012: 8:00-9:30 a.m. Court End A, Larrick Center
– November 20, 2012: 3:00-4:30 p.m. Court End A, Larrick Center

The line numbered revised promotion and tenure document has been posted on the Provost website ( under “Announcements & Events,” and I encourage you to review it before you attend a session. The fall 2012 semester will be dedicated to an open dialogue on the proposed revisions. Following this period of dialogue and input, the normal approval process for university policy changes will be followed beginning in January 2013.

I will look forward to your participation at these important meetings.
